HIS JOURNEY
1960 – Born in Marrow Creek, Illinois, a small, working-class town.
1973 – Enrolls at Marrow Creek West High School. Not picked for any team sports, but shows up to every open gym and rec tryout — just in case they needed a sub.
1975 – Plays his first official high school basketball game as an emergency fill-in. Scores no points. Records an accidental block with his face.
1978 – Graduates high school; rejected by five junior colleges. Moves to the city anyway.
1978–1981 – Plays in semi-recreational basketball leagues. Known for hustle, floor burns, and never giving up on a play — even when it was already over.
1981 – Receives “Most Improved Attitude” ribbon. Cries in car.
1982 – Mails homemade draft packets to every pro team. Gets two return-to-sender stamps, one cease-and-desist, and zero callbacks. Goes undrafted.
1983–1992 – The grind: pick-up games, sub-leagues, 24-hour gyms. No glory, no sponsors — just miles of effort. Nobody remembers his stat lines, but everyone remembers the guy who never stopped running.
1993 – Briefly experiments with other sports but returns to basketball, where he suffers catastrophic muscle tears diving for a ball already out of bounds. Told by multiple GPs to “never do that again.”
1994 – Goes off-grid for recovery. Rumors swirl he’s “training for something.” Sightings grow rare. Buys a label maker. Registers a brand name he never uses.
1995 – Denis Avelete mysteriously disappears.
